"YOUNG WRITERS" CATEGORY : FULL ENTRIES LIST

We have included the final scores, for the interest of the competitors and to show how close-spread the marks were - quite astonishing! Thank you to everyone who entered; the high standard made for a very lively judging period and a lot of discussion afterwards amongst the judges! The list is in order of ENTRY I.D. and not in order of marks.

The ID numbers in the left column (in ascending order) were supplied to entrants in their acknowledgement emails; we have not used their names here, to preserve their privacy. If you have lost your ID number and forgotten the title of your entry, and can thus not identify your marks below, you may contact us. Note: the comments were made during judging, when the stories were totally anonymous. None of the entrants is known to any of the judges.

CRITIQUES:
As promised, each of the entrants will receive a brief critique of their story. Because of the sensitivity of the age group, we will not be displaying comments here.

JUDGES' OBSERVATIONS:

We were all delighted with the high standard of entries, especially considering that the average age of the entrants is 10-11 years! What surprised us even more was that sometimes the creativity, grammar and phrasing was of as good a standard as many of the entries for our other categories. It especially thrills me to realise that this means there is a definite upturn in the schooling of the English Language, after the dreadful time of letting it all slide, and I'd like to say to all the teachers out there who have been paying attention to this in their pupils: Hurrah! - and thank you!

With the writing having been so well done, we would like to further encourage the entrants (who all showed great promise!) to remember to go over your work several times, polishing and correcting, until you know for certain that it is faultless.

We especially were delighted with the participation of a school - Alleyn's Junior School in Dulwich submitted nearly half of our entries, and we were very impressed with their quality. We certainly hope that more schools will do likewise in our current Young Writers' competition; it's such a good way to motivate pupils to create, imagine, and pay attention to detail - not to mention grammar!
